Are you protecting your Gut? Pt.1
I want to share with you some healthy GUT lessons that I learned from one of my favorite books:
The MicroBiome Solution – by: Robynne Chutkan (who in my research is one the top MDs for digestion/gut health in the world!)
The microbiome refers to all of the organisms that live in or on your body: all of the bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and helminths (worms), as well as all their genes. A staggering hundred trillion microbes that include thousands of different species inhabit your nooks and crannies – with more than a billion bacteria in just one drop of fluid in your colon alone.
Tommy 10 lessons from Robynne Part 1:
1. You unique microbial footprint develops over your lifetime, and it reflects everything about you: your parents health, how you were born, what you first ate, where you lived, infections, antibiotics, occupation etc. End result is a microbial mix so distinctive from person to person that yours is a more accurate identifier of you than your own DNA.
2. Antibiotics can actually make you more susceptible to infection because they deplete essential bacterial species that can fight off viruses and dangerous bacteria.
3. Artificial sweeteners claim to save calories but studies show they may release even more insulin (fat storage hormone) than regular sugar.
4. Food cravings, anxiety, memory, mood, and how easily we lose or gain weight are just some of the traits that are heavily influenced by our gut bacteria.
5. Are Our Bacteria Making Us Fat? Certain microbiomes extract more nutrients from food: People colonized with gut bacteria that are more efficient at breaking down food are able to absorb more calories and end up gaining more weight!
6. The food you eat clearly affects the composition of the bacterial communities in your gut
7. Cutting down on processed grains and refined sugar can affect our microbiome in a positive way.
8. Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent found in consumer products such as soaps, detergents, and some brands of toothpaste. Can result in higher rate of food allergies and higher body mass index.
9. Bt is bacterium that lives in soil and produces a toxin that kills insects by making their intestines burst. Biotech companies have inserted the gene for Bt toxin into foods such as corn so it can produce its own insecticide (GMOs). Canadian study: Bt toxin present in 93%of pregnant women tested, 80% of umbilical blood in their babies, and 67% non-pregnant women. Studies show Bt can be transferred into our gut bacteria and synthesized. YIKES!
